Getting Traffic

Five Free and Effective Ways to Drive Traffic to a Website

Now that you have built your website, you need to drive traffic to it. The top three question people always ask are:

“How do I get traffic to my blog or website?”trafficahead

“How long will it take before I see traffic?”

“Can I drive quality traffic for free?”

If you have any of these questions please continue to read on.

So you want to know how to get traffic to your blog or your website.  First off I do not believe in any website traffic software, to me you run the risk of getting slapped by Google.  Then all of your hard work is gone and near impossible to make that ground back up.  Not to mention that costs money.  There are plenty of ways how to get traffic to your website, free!

Content, Content, Content

You hear it all the time Content is KING.  That is true.  Does that mean you should set up an auto-blog and you will have all the content you ever need?  NO!!! It might help at first but you will eventually be removed from Google’s rankings all together as your site will be seen as spam.  By content you need original (not spun) content, regularly.  By writing original, natural, and keyword rich content, Google will love you and you will increase your rankings within Google and have tons of free traffic.  I said keyword rich not keyword stuffing.  Google can tell if you are stuffing your site with keywords as it is not a natural way to post.  The best keyword tool I have found is JAAXY.  Read more about it in my post on Keyword Research and Tool Reviews.  Give it a try for free see if you like it.  It can save you all kinds of time on keyword research.

Social Networks

One of the easiest ways to drive traffic to your website is to self-promote it on social networks.  These networks get large amounts of traffic and you can redirect them to your site.  Sites like, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and even LinkedIn can drive large amounts of traffic to your site.  Why not share your posts on these sites?  If you have snappy headlines or a great picture or both the post might go viral and then you will have a large stream of free traffic to your site.  It is easy and it’s free.

Ping Your website

After each update to your website, you should ping it.  What is a ping?  Well a ping is a digital handshake with other websites.  It is not a backlink.  What it does is it allows search engines to know that you have new content available and allows for quicker indexing.  The quicker you get indexed the more likely you will get traffic.  There are many services out there and some are free and some are not free.  They are easy to find with a quick Google search.  One free one I use is www.pingmylink.com it is simple just put the URL into the engine, click “submit” and wait, you don’t even need to sign up for that service.  It can take a while for it to complete the process but that doesn’t mean you can’t do other things while it is processing.

Guest Blogger

Being a guest blogger is another great way to drive traffic to your website for free.  It does take a bit of writing skills and you want to be a guest on a reputable and established site.  Be careful not to spam because if you do you will lose your own credibility and will not see any benefit.  Then you can invite some of those writers that share your niche to be guest bloggers on your site.  What a great way to get that traffic and have a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

Forums

If your anything like me I search forums on topics that interest me all the time.  Make yourself a leader in the forums of your specific niche.  Most forums won’t let you post a link to your site in a posting, so how does this help you ask?  While that is true, most forums let you put a link in your signature.  Make sure you use your signature line to your benefit.  Help others.

You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”~ Zig Ziglar

But How Long will it Take

IMG_1066So there are some tips for some free traffic.  It does take time.  How long you ask?  That is a tough question to answer.  The reality is it depends on your consistency of doing the all of the above.  The best part is once you start seeing the rankings in Google and other search engines it becomes a sustainable business process.  You can easily build an authority site with a little help and I am here to help you.  I would also suggest looking at my other sections, Getting Started and Build a Website.

Some really interesting tips there on how to increase web traffic, Marc. I wasn’t aware of “pinging” changes to my site, so I’m definitely going to look at making more use of that facility. Thanks for publishing this.

      Phil,
Pinging is one of those things that will let the search engines know you have something new. If you ping a site a second time if no changes were made it wont help a bit, won’t hurt it but it won’t help. I am glad you found the article useful and best of luck to you. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

        Hi Marc,
Thanks for this – I was also not too sure how useful pinging was. Now I’m going to go ahead and add it to my list of training so I become more familiar.

I hope you are doing well, thanks!

          Marcel,
I am glad to help. The ping just lets the information get indexed faster. It really only takes a minute to setup then about 30 minutes to run but it can be done in the background. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

I have heard “Ping” a lot lately but, was trying to not overload my already busy brain. You finally gave it a simple and clear description for me. Thank you! There is so much terminology washing over me every day as I work on my websites. Sometimes, something you hear repeatedly can be made sense of by someone who is on your energetic wavelength! Much gratitude brother! : )
